not made up

This past month I shot an eco-conscious beauty shoot with Gilles Bensimon for Above Magazine - a Vanity Fair-style mag for Avant-garde environmentalists. It took place on a beautiful beach - but unfortunately one located at the tip of Long Island in the middle of winter. Submerged in freezing cold water isn’t my ideal shooting condition - but hey, since when do I call the shots on these things anyway? :o) Despite the cold temperatures, I must admit the opportunity to shoot outdoors was invigorating.

I love how Gilles sat right down in the cold water.

The curious case of the dancing dog!

Here I am prepping before my shoot with the VERY Style Guide. If you’re in London or Paris - pick up one of the latest (conveniently pocket-sized) copies, which highlights a lot of the cool shops, restaurants and hangouts in cities around the world. I was shooting for the New York City edition. They asked me to put together some of my favorite hangouts, which I was more than happy to do. And the team and I got to shoot a little video for you prior to the cover shoot with some behind-the-scenes action with my Schwinn, “backyard,” and all my own clothes. I got to sport my handmade hand-painted dress equipped with cockroach (yes I said cockroach) by an old design label called Yuma Topeka, organic jeans by Del Forte Denim, Charmone Shoes, and some great crocheted scarves by Projekt - a woman’s weaving project in South Africa.

Flights of Whimsy

whats-inside_myfavorite-store

If you are in Sydney, you must stop by my friend Rachel’s shop, Bird who is also in the pages of my book Style, Naturally. Even if you are not in the shopping mood, you’ll at least stare in wide-eyed wonder of the store’s magical landscape of whimsical printed organic clothes, linens and other novelties. I was most certain that some nymph or naiad would stretch its tiny limbs and work its way out of her printed fabrics and alight on my shoulder. Or at least a fairy or two. Regardless, some flight of fancy must have come over me because I fell under a spell that resulted in a more-than robust credit card bill!

Had a chance to speak in Australia and sign some Style, Naturally books when I was there. You may notice a little ruddy color to my face in the last shot. I was yelling out to the crowd for eight minutes or so before the power went back on in the microphone! Hey, you can’t let a little setback stop you!

Style, Naturally in Hong Kong!

I met up with my friend Fannie in Hong Kong, who encouraged me after much discussion, to go and visit a Page One bookstore to see if indeed my book, “Style, Naturally” was there. Not only was it there - it was right in the front of the bookstore! We caused quite a stir with passerbys and customers when we started to snap a few shots.

This came out in the South China Morning Post Sunday edition a few weeks later.

Oh my, you MUST watch this news video from Campbell Live in New Zealand. Firstly, I look like a wreck, but secondly, it’s funny as all hell. It’s really one of the finest, funniest pieces of news reporting ever…borderline Onion but all real.
